Irony is a double-edged axe

This lady is apparently well-regarded as a great success story of the prisons system because she was the first inmate ever to become a lawyer (inmate first, then lawyer).

Now she's pushing to abolish the prison system because she says "it doesn't work".

So is she credible because she's been in the prison system and has a first-hand knowledge of it ? Or is she not to be believed because the fact that's she's reformed is a reasonably good indicator that prison has at least somewhat influenced her turnaround ?
