Excuse me, have you been outsourced ?

So my project finally came to an end yesterday. Or at least my part in it anyway. The announcement was made yesterday.

Job losses in hundreds

The comms team did a pretty good job of keeping it quiet. Either that or they got lucky and the major newswires decided not to pick it up. But basically, my role in the project was looking after the document flow and putting together the massive contract for the deal.

So as of yesterday, I’m ‘orphaned’ again, until the yet-to-be-formed project team decides they need me, or my partners find other projects for me. In a strange way, I’m kind of happy to be taking a break again, after this 2.5 month stint.

In a twist of fate, Shirley started work again last week. She’s started work as a part-time surgical nurse at a medical centre 5 minutes drive from our house. On days of good weather, she cycles, which takes her about 15-20 minutes. I think she’s still getting her feet wet, but at the same time, she’s finding herself more challenged again. Which is good. For me. It’s better to have conversations that don’t revolve around Oprah :D

Speaking of twists, Shirley strained her neck the other day with over-enthusiastic net-surfing. She was reading up on a topic so intently that she forgot to take a break and ended up with a severely stiff neck the next morning. After trip to a sports therapist and a chiropractor the following day, she’s mobile again, but the chiropractor pointed out that she had several problems with her spine that needed attention.

We saw Varekai last Friday. It was Shirley’s first Cirque and we were both ‘wowed’ out. I get pretty jaded about performances a lot of times but Cirque somehow always seems to impress me heaps. One of the big ones, they had a guy (Guy A) lying on his back, and juggling another guy (Guy B) with his legs. So imagine this. Guy B is sitting, on his butt, on Guy A’s upward facing feet. And Guy A is flipping Guy B around in somersaults like at least 10 times consecutively without stopping.

The words don’t do it justice.

Cirque Rocks.

We’re off to the Rodeo this weekend (Yeah, I was in an event-sorta mood) so I’m hoping that’ll be interesting. Shirley’s kinda ho-hum about it but hey, when’s the last time YOU saw a rodeo ? I’d never seen one in my life apart from TV so I thought it should be worth watching at least once.

Funny thing. After I've been working on this project, Shirley's using the word 'outsourced' a lot more. And it also put me in the frame of mind of thinking about things which could be outsourced. Medical doctors for example. I've always thought that the entire consultation process could be more efficiently done by doctors in different time zones working to keep a clinic open for 24 hours. Or how about a dad who outsources all his dad'ly duties so he can stay at home and perfect his golf swing. I can just see some kind of cult classic comedy about being outsourced. Hmmm.. an idea for my book ?
