Work's been great. I'm quite happy to finally be working in a 'team' environment. I'm part of a small army of consultants and it's great to work in a collaborative environment with people who think and approach work similarly. But this past week, I was completely caught off guard when, while having a break from a meeting, the two other consultants I was working with, were having a conversation about cars. I'll try to see if I can recall it verbatim.
S (to D): You strike me as more of a boxster.
D: Really ? You think so ? I've always been more of a 911, old school kind of guy myself. I did think about the boxter though. I like the look of it.
S: Yeah. I tried it out. It's great. I love the interior and the handling, there's nothing like it.
D: So why aren't you driving one ?
S: Because I have three kids. It'd be great to drive but can you imagine the hassle of picking them up one at a time ?!
(At this point, I almost fell off my chair)
D: Yeah. It's really more of a fun, personal-time kinda car isn't it ?
D (Who turns to me): What about you joe ? what sort of porsche do you think suits you ?
Me (complete bewilderment): Huh ? What language are you guys speaking ? I've never even SMELLED a porsche, let alone sat in one.
D: Really ? You should ! They're great !
I left out some of the technical details about the Porsches because I had no idea what they were on about but the conversation eventually veered back to my range of normalcy. Granted that these two guys I was working with were well into their 40s and 50s, but I'd never thought I'd be having a conversation about the finer details and differences between sports cars that I'd need a mortage to pay for.
Took the Mensa test yesterday.
In a five-word summary: Die Jia Lat Jia Lat.
It's made up of two big tests, with heaps of sub-tests. In one of the sub-tests, 15 questions, to be done in 3 minutes. Now given enough time, I'm sure I would've aced the thing. But try doing the math. 5 questions per minute, which gives one 12 seconds per question. If you sneeze, and take 3 seconds to take out the tissue, 4 seconds to wipe your nose, you're pretty much stuffed and have to go on to the next question. Anyway, I'd just be curious to find out what percentile I sit in.
(edit: Thanks to shirley for correcting my inggrand :P)
