"We, the citizens of Singapore,"Despite not living in Singapore, I recognise where I've come from, and I'm grateful for the environment that I had growing up. Given that I'm happy now, I can't deny the initial steps that've gotten me here.
"pledge ourselves as one united people."Just today, I heard a couple of Singaporeans on the escalator. Complaining about something. "si beh sian ah", "always like that one". I'm not kidding. I almost want to go... "Wahlumak! Steady lah!"
"Regardless of race, language or religion,"I'm grateful that our mother tongue - Singlish, has allowed those fluent in it to convey expressions in a vocabulary that spans multiple languages. When I ask for a "kopi o kosong" at the cafes here, I just get a blank stare.
"to build a democratic society, based on justice and equality"It's easy to take these fundamentals of society for granted. And again, we've been spoilt that we can.
"so as to achieve happiness, prosperity and progress for our Nation"I'm not sure how happy the 'nation' is as a whole as it's apparent our 'national sport' is complaining. But you can't argue against the prosperity and progress (not counting the 6.5% contraction in GDP of course)
Happy Birthday Singapore.
Also, as a birthday present, can u please not mobilise me when I'm back on my once-a-year holiday ?
Ok steady buh bye.
