The cost of charity

In my naiveté, I had always imagined that the young, enthusiastic person stopping me in the street to raise awareness (and funds) about human rights (amnesty international) and the environment (greenpeace) was typically a volunteer - a believer in the cause who was willing to spend a few hours of their day promoting that effort.

So when I happened to come across a particularly enthusiastic young man who was wearing an amnesty international t-shirt one day, it struck me that I had seen him, on another street, a few days ago, wearing a red-cross t-shirt.

At first I thought to myself "Wow. This guy is like a charity superhero.. out to save the world". Then I came across this.

Apparently, this guy (and I'd guess others like him) was being paid $17 an hour.

If this was his full time job, he'd be earning almost 3k a month.

Not big money sure, but still remarkably above "kindness of the heart".

But suddenly, I could relate to the guy pushing credit cards at the bottom of the escalator (in the building where I work). Both their strategies were remarkably similar.

Rotate 'salespeople/fundraisers', and 'credit card companies/charities', enough such that you see a different face every day.

It's a bit like the rotating billboards, with people.

Hmm.. Charities and Credit Card companies.. Opposite ends of the goodwill spectrum, but meeting in the middle with tactics.

Ok. Enough with the serious stuff. Inner voice: Think funny joe ! Funny! That's not very funny!

How about this ?

Anti-kidnapping consultant kidnapped in Mexico.

It's quite possible that he wasn't very good at his job, but I'd like to imagine a scenario where the the kidnappers hired a kidnapping consultant.

Kidnapper Juan: So wat dos dis keednapping consultant say ?
Kidnapper Dos: He says we need de diversification strategy. After we snatch de target, we need three cars and a donkey to make de getaway to spread de risk. Then he says somesing aboud de currency risk exposure and LIBOR fluctuations affecting the ransom money.
Kidnapper Juan: Aye carumba. Dese consultants are crazy no ?

I'm sure there're other poor saps out there who need to be 'looking after their own backyard'. And google provides:
