I know. 1/12 of the year has passed already. I figured that since I wasn't on facebook, I should actually blog more to make up for it.
I wrote the entry below shortly after the new year. Lazy me. It took 3 weeks to post it.
So here it is anyway.

When you think about it, the difference between 2007 and 2008 is barely a second. It takes the same amount of time to sneeze as it does to tick from 11:59 to 12:00. But yet that little difference is so vast.
What happened in the past 365 days gets pushed aside, and the next 365 are welcomed amid cheers and jubilation (in our case, a quiet moment to admire the signal flares from the ships on the East Coast in Singapore).
I started thinking about what was so great about a new year, and came to the conclusion that it was primarily about hope. Hope for a better tomorrow, hope for the achievement of greater things, and for the cure of past ills.
Over dinner that same week, my dad and I were having a conversation about that same topic - hope, about how people who no longer have hope, no longer have the will to leave. He'd read Viktor Frankl's book, Man's search for meaning, and drew many parallels to people he'd met before who had nothing to look forward to, nothing to live for.
I'm inclined to agree. After all, life is so much more pleasant if you can imagine that the next day is better than the last.
It's pretty simple, but it makes a lot of sense. Hope is the great equaliser. So here's hoping you have a good 2008.
