Learnt a new word today. Racial Unassimilability. Used in the following op-ed piece in the LA Times about US immigration.

There were so few restrictions on immigration in the 19th and early 20th centuries that there was no such thing as "illegal immigration." The government excluded a mere 1% of the 25 million immigrants who landed at Ellis Island before World War I, mostly for health reasons. (Chinese were the exception, excluded on grounds of "racial unassimilability.") (emphasis mine)

Basically, if you're not following, the US is having a big debate about illegal immigrants. Just like Singapore, the US has its supply of cheap, foreign labour, mainly in the form of Mexicans crossing the porous border to do the jobs that Americans don't want. I couldn't find any definition of the term so I'll take it to mean that they couldn't fit in based on their race (and/or culture).

Maybe that's why there're Chinatowns in every country in the world ? because chinese went there, and they didn't like what they saw, so they built a small version of home.

Also, Daphne's got her own blog ! She doesn't really have stuff on it yet considering I just set it up for her but here's hoping it'll help her vent her frustrations.
