Wow ! I'm like a reading demon or something. Not only am I keeping up with my school reading assignments, I'm finding time to read a book on my PDA, and I just 'finished' reading Hubbert's Peak. 'Finished' because I sped through 180 pages in less than an hour. But I got the important bits, the parts I was interested in.
The reason I read through it so quickly was because there were some pretty interesting arguments AND it was taking time away from my other 'school-related' readings. But the message was pretty somber.
Using cold hard mathematics and knowledge of geology, the author, who bases his work on an earlier geologist's method of predicting oil production, basically says that the over the next four years (2004-2008), we will arrive at the peak of world oil production, and it's all downhill from there.
What does this mean ? Well, considering that so much of the world is still in its developing stages, and we have already grown so dependent on fossil fuel that we can't even imagine existing without it, it's a pretty scary thought.
Renewable energy sounds like it should be getting a lot more attention that it is. As for me, I think I'll start taking the tram a little more. (Especially considering how fuel prices have broken the $1 mark)
All the better I guess. I'll need more reading time (on the tram) to get through some of the readings that're coming up soon. (FOUR chapters of macroecons by next monday... *sigh*)
