PRIME Minister John Howard has defended a $42,680 bill for a four-day official stay at Rome's best hotel, saying he was no more lavish than previous prime ministers.
"The Howards have spent as much in one night of luxurious accommodation in Italy as an aged pensioner receives in a year."
